What “IPv6 not detected” actually means
An IPv6 not detected result means a particular test did not obtain the expected IPv6 observation. It does not, by itself, establish why. Your connection may lack routed IPv6, a VPN may intentionally block it, a browser request may have failed, or the test endpoint may be unavailable. Start with the measurement that failed instead of changing several network settings at once.
The first useful response to IPv6 not detected is to record the tool, time, browser, and network you used. Note whether a VPN or proxy was active and whether ordinary websites still loaded. Keep an error message such as timeout or endpoint unavailable alongside the result. Those details distinguish a missing observation from a confirmed configuration problem.
Our IPv6 test requests separate IPv4 and IPv6 HTTP endpoints. Its IPv6 not detected equivalent is an endpoint that did not return a usable address. The page identifies the scope of that request; it does not inspect your router or every adapter. Another tool may test additional properties, so compare its method before assuming different labels contradict each other.
Local addresses and IPv6 not detected
An address beginning with fe80: is link-local. Its presence does not demonstrate an internet route, and an IPv6 not detected result can coexist with a working local interface. A device may also have multiple addresses with different scopes and lifetimes. Check the active adapter rather than copying the first colon-separated value from a long settings list. IPv6 address architecture
A globally scoped address is stronger configuration evidence, but it still does not prove that a destination is reachable. Routing, filtering, name resolution, and the remote service matter too. Treat IPv6 not detected as the beginning of a layered investigation: configured address, usable route, reachable endpoint, and application result are separate observations.
A practical IPv6 not detected checklist
First rerun the same test once while keeping the connection stable. Do not repeatedly reload many tools simultaneously; that adds noise and can trigger rate limits. If IPv6 not detected appears only once and a later run succeeds, record the intermittent behavior rather than declaring a permanent fault or making an unnecessary configuration change.
Next compare another IPv6-specific endpoint or a tool with a documented method. A dual-stack website can load over IPv4 even when its IPv6 path is unusable. Therefore, “the website opened” does not resolve IPv6 not detected. Happy Eyeballs describes connection strategies that reduce delays when alternative addresses or families are available.
Check the same browser on another network you are authorized to use. A phone hotspot and home Wi-Fi can have different protocol support. If IPv6 not detected follows one network across several devices, investigate that network's router and provider. If it follows one device across otherwise working networks, focus on that device's configuration and software.
Then compare browsers on the same device without changing networks. An IPv6 not detected result limited to one browser suggests investigating that browser's extensions, proxy settings, managed policies, or request errors. It does not prove which of those caused the problem. Record the comparison and use a controlled change to test one explanation at a time.
Inspect settings without resetting the connection
On Windows, inspect the active adapter's details or use ipconfig /all to read its configuration. On macOS, review the relevant network service in System Settings. On Linux, ip -6 address and ip -6 route show address and route information. These observations help explain IPv6 not detected without immediately releasing leases, deleting routes, or disrupting a remote session.
Use the platform-specific Windows, Mac, or Linux instructions if the adapter list is unfamiliar. For an IPv6 not detected investigation, identify the adapter carrying your current connection. Virtual machines, containers, VPNs, and disconnected interfaces may each add unrelated entries.
On phones, compare Wi-Fi with mobile data only when doing so is appropriate for your plan and privacy needs. A successful test on cellular does not establish that your home router supports the same service. The iPhone and Android guides explain where connection details appear and why browser observations can differ from settings.
IPv6 not detected at the router boundary
For IPv6 not detected across your home network, read the router's WAN and LAN IPv6 status. A provider-facing connection and an address prefix available to your local network are different pieces of configuration. Use the router manufacturer's instructions for its actual operating mode; avoid copying settings from an unrelated model or provider.
If the status is unclear, ask your ISP whether IPv6 is supported on your specific service and equipment, and whether any activation or provisioning is required. Include the time and reproducible symptoms. An IPv6 not detected screenshot cannot tell the ISP whether the failure is provisioning, local configuration, routing, or an unavailable test destination without that additional context.
IPv6 not detected with a VPN or firewall
Some VPN configurations provide IPv6 transport; others block IPv6 to avoid traffic using an unintended route. Read the provider's documentation for the particular client and mode. IPv6 not detected while a VPN is active may be consistent with its intended policy. It is neither automatic proof of protection nor an instruction to disable the VPN.
If you choose to compare connected and disconnected states, understand that the disconnected run contacts external services through the underlying network. Stop sensitive work and follow any workplace policy before changing protection. Record both runs separately. Do not compare an old baseline with a later IPv6 not detected result after also changing Wi-Fi or browser settings.
The WebRTC leak test observes another browser networking mechanism. Its candidates and HTTP references can help investigate differences, but it does not replace a routed IPv6 test. Likewise, IPv6 not detected does not certify DNS privacy, application isolation, or the absence of traffic outside a tunnel.
Avoid treating a firewall as an all-or-nothing switch. ICMPv6 has roles in neighbor discovery and error reporting, including path MTU operation. Blocking necessary messages can break connectivity, while indiscriminately allowing everything is not a sound diagnostic policy. An administrator should review the relevant rules using ICMPv6 filtering guidance, especially when IPv6 not detected affects a managed network.
Do not disable the Windows IPv6 component as a generic fix for IPv6 not detected. Microsoft advises against disabling or unbinding it because Windows components can depend on it. Its configuration guidance distinguishes address-family preference from disabling the protocol. Changes should address an identified cause and have a documented rollback.
DNS, partial failures, and misleading shortcuts
A DNS response containing an AAAA record describes a destination's published address. It does not create IPv6 service for your device. Changing to another recursive resolver cannot, on its own, repair a missing routed connection. When investigating IPv6 not detected, keep name resolution and transport reachability separate; the DNS lookup tool tests the former through its named resolver.
Conversely, a failed hostname lookup can prevent a browser probe from attempting the expected connection. Inspect the precise error and compare authorized diagnostic tools instead of assuming every failure is routing. If IPv6 not detected occurs at only one destination, the remote service, its DNS records, and the path to it remain possible explanations.
Small requests working while larger transfers stall can suggest a different problem from having no IPv6 address at all. Capture a repeatable example and involve the network administrator rather than guessing an MTU value. An IPv6 not detected summary compresses evidence; useful troubleshooting expands it into specific requests, outcomes, and conditions.
Questions about IPv6 not detected
Do I need to fix this if websites work?
That depends on your task and service expectations. IPv6 not detected may be normal on a connection that currently offers only IPv4, while a promised dual-stack service deserves investigation. If you need an IPv6-only resource or are testing a deployment, a functioning IPv4 connection is not an equivalent substitute.
Will restarting my router guarantee a fix?
No. A restart may refresh some transient state but cannot guarantee provider support or correct a persistent configuration error. Record the evidence before disrupting the network. If IPv6 not detected returns consistently, a repeatable comparison and provider-specific guidance are more useful than repeatedly rebooting shared equipment.
What should I send to support?
For an IPv6 not detected report, include the test URL, timestamp, browser and operating system, connection type, VPN state, and whether another device or network reproduces it. Share only the addresses and configuration fields support actually needs. Remove credentials and unrelated identifiers. Describe observations precisely rather than presenting an unverified cause as established fact.
